Head of Operations – re-advertisement (previous applicants please do not re-apply)

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic person to lead and inspire our instructor team.

We need someone with proven experience who can take on a busy programme and work with the wider team to further develop the potential of the centre.


You will be enthusiastic and passionate about the outdoors and the environment, understand experiential learning and how it is used; and must have a minimum of 3 years in a similar role. You will be able to demonstrate high standards of communication, organisation, attention to detail, professionalism, self-motivation and be a team role model.

As a minimum you will hold the following qualifications:

  • SPA/ RCI Award
  • UKCC British Canoeing Level 2 Coach Award
  • Valid First Aid certificate (minimum 16 hours)
  • Valid Driving Licence

Plus at least one of the following:

  • ML / WGL Award or equivalent - assessed

Key Tasks

Achieving aims and objectives

  • Ensure all visitors receive an outstanding experience and group aims and objectives are met
  • Ensure programmes meet and exceed the expectations of guests

Team Management

  • Coach, mentor and inspire the team
  • Management and supervision of the team including rota, hours monitoring, holiday and sickness
  • Work with Training and Personnel for Ops recruitment, training and if necessary, disciplinary
  • Management of technical advisors, external contractors and freelancers

Activity Quality and Safety

  • Ensure operating procedures are updated and followed and comply with industry and NGB best practice
  • Ensure checks, process and paperwork are maintained
  • Support the team to perform to the best of their ability
  • Work with the wider team to improve and develop existing and new activities
  • Ensure all health and safety paperwork is completed in a professional and timely manner

Inductions, training and monitoring

  • Proven experience of ensuring high standards of instruction are delivered through comprehensive induction, training and observation programmes

Mill on the Brue is a family run Outdoor Activity Centre in Somerset with a strong environmental ethos. Established in 1982, the Centre provides residential and day courses with an emphasis on experiential learning.

Salary: £28,000

Activity Instructors

We are looking for outstanding, enthusiastic, energetic and inspiring Instructors for our 2021 season.

Mill on the Brue is an award winning family run Outdoor Activity Centre in Somerset with a strong environmental ethos. The Centre provides residential and day courses with an experiential learning focus. We want you to get satisfaction and develop in your role, so you will work with the same group throughout their stay, building relationships and delivering a wide range of activities each week.

Ideally you will have some previous instructional, teaching or coaching experience and British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor. Bushcraft, climbing and high ropes experience and qualifications will also be an advantage.

There will be regular training opportunities and support in gaining NGB awards.

In previous years our Instructors gained qualifications in First Aid, Orienteering, the Climbing Wall Award, Hill and Moorland and a Bushcraft training course.

  • Training will be provided for the role
  • Onsite accommodation with optional full board available, WIFI and weekly cleaning
  • Rural location with local facilities and social opportunities all within easy reach

We are looking to recruit:

Head of Housekeeping

Rivermead Housekeeper

Housekeepers x2

We have 120 beds over three accommodation blocks with an additional 60 camping beds from May until September. We work mainly with primary schools and during the summer have unaccompanied children visiting for summer camps.

The work can be fast paced, very busy, and due to the nature of the site involve lots of stairs ability to cope with this on a daily basis is essential. Hours will vary according to business needs so candidates need to be flexible.

Applicants should have experience of working in a small close-knit team, ability to problem solve, work to a tight schedule and be able to work to the high standards of housekeeping Mill on the Brue expects. We do not use chemicals anywhere on site.

Start dates: as soon as possible

Head of Housekeeping £22,500 + 5% pension contribution

  • To end of November with potential to become permanent

Requires the ability to organise a busy work schedule to ensure effective team working and high standards. Management of the housekeeping team including rotas, hours recording, ordering and liaising with Sales, Operations and Catering to ensure customers are delighted with their stay. Hands on with all housekeeping tasks.

Housekeeper (Rivermead) £19,000 + 5% pension contribution

  • To end of November with potential to become permanent

Rivermead is our brand new self-contained accommodation block. The successful candidate will be responsible for the cleanliness of all rooms, including laundry and bedroom changeovers and also setting up and serving breakfast and cleaning up afterwards.

Housekeepers £10 per hour

  • Seasonal – January to end of November

Will work as part of the team to ensure high levels of cleanliness in a busy, fast paced environment. This will include laundry, bedroom changeovers, cleaning of bathrooms, cleaning of all public areas and offices.

Duties include helping with preparation of meals, cooking, serving, kitchen paperwork, cleaning down and ensuring afternoon cakes are available for the customers on a daily basis.

Chefs are expected to work using their own initiative. The rota is worked out over a seven day week and will include evenings.


  1. Sensible hours – Straight shift patterns (7:30am - 2:30pm/3.00pm or 11.45am – 7.45pm)
  2. Staff uniform and meal provided during each shift.

Pay and Conditions:

  • Full time, 35 - 40 hours per week, seasonal contract until November 2021 with the opportunity to extend
  • The hours are based on shifts over 5 days. The hours are flexible and will be adjusted according to the rota, it will include the occasional weekend
  • Relevant catering qualifications and/or experience essential
  • Experience of cooking for large numbers.
  • Salary: £18,000 pro rata
  • Holiday entitlement is based on 31 days pro rata. However, due to the nature of the business the chef may be required to work on bank holidays

Kitchen Assistants

Hours: 35 – 40 hours per week

Holiday: 28 days plus Christmas Day, Boxing Day and News Day

Temporary (Beginning of February to end of November)

Main purpose of post:

To assist in the preparation of delicious and nutritious meals and ensure a high standard of cleanliness is maintained within the kitchen and Longhouse including preparing the dining area for meals and break times. Serving food and cleaning of dining and kitchen areas.

Key Tasks:


  1. Assist in preparation, cooking and serving nutritious meals according to the customer group including summer and camping menus as required by Catering Manager and Sous Chef
  2. Assist in preparation of meals for the local Primary School as required
  3. Washing up and ensuring cleanliness of the kitchen


  1. Ensure the dining room is set up and cleaned down
  2. Advising the Catering Manager or Sous Chef of any incidentals that need ordering or replacing

Health and Safety

  1. Health and Safety in the kitchen and Longhouse, ensuring all regulations are enforced
  2. Assist in the management of recycling as directed
  3. You will be expected to complete a COSSH and Food, Health and Hygiene course


  1. Actively upholding the Centre’s environmental policy and make suggestions for improvements where necessary and appropriate
  2. To work effectively and efficiently with all other teams

Person Specification


  • Experience of producing delicious and nutritious meals using seasonal produce
  • Must be able to work either shift as per rota
  • Flexibility to work evenings and occasional weekends
  • Able to work on a multi level site including stairs
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently within a diverse team
  • Must like children and young people


  • Experience of large scale catering and different dietary needs

Salary: National Minimum Wage/Living Wage
