Job description

Job Roles and Responsibilities:

· Liaising with the owner weekly, concerning workload and checking repair book daily.

· Keeping the maintenance folder up to date for internal and external suppliers.

· Seasonal maintenance, including residential and staff accommodation.

· Painting and decorating, ‘first aid’ electrics and plumbing, general building work.

· Purchasing of materials and equipment through the owner.

· Reading gas, water, solar and electrical meters regularly, recording the readings and submitting.

· Ensuring the centre has fully functioning services at all times.

· Working with other teams when required.

· General maintenance and care of water ways including the kitchen fat trap.

· Ensuring regular fire checks, PAT testing.

· Responsible for checking vehicles.

Salary: £21,500 +company pension scheme

Permanent, full time contract following completion of probationary period

Group Leader – July and August

We are looking for Group Leaders for six weeks in July and August to assist with our summer camps (10 July – 20th August), with a training week from 4th – 8th July.

A liking for sport, outdoor activity, craft, and experience with children and young people are all an advantage, as are a current first aid certificate and a pool lifeguard qualification.

Must be able to cope with a multi-level site and work outdoors in all weathers.

Kitchen Assistant – Seasonal

We require someone to assist our wonderful Catering team

Qualifications are not necessarily important – an ability to prepare nutritious, delicious meals using seasonal and local produce, high standards of cleanliness and excellent customer service are essential.

Required to work shifts and occasional weekends on rota.

Ability to work on a multi-level site with stairs essential.

To start as soon as possible, with contract to end of November and opportunity to return next year. Salary: £10 per hour

Seasonal - Full Time

We are looking for outstanding, enthusiastic, energetic and inspiring Instructors for our 2022 season.

Our Instructors work with the same group of children for the entirety of their visit, so there is plenty of opportunity to build relationships with the children and to see them evolve throughout their stay. We also regularly work with adult groups and during the summer have six weeks of Summer Camps for unaccompanied children who are here to have fun. These groups provide a refreshing change of pace during the season.

We want you to have a great experience with us and develop in your role therefore regular training opportunities are available and also support in gaining NGB awards. In house training/a signing off process is provided for the Instructor role.

Ideally you will have some previous experience of instructing, teaching or coaching and also the UKCC/BCU Paddlesport Instructor/Level 1 award. A current first aid certificate, bushcraft and high ropes experience/qualifications would also be desirable.

Mill on the Brue is based in a rural location with local facilities and social opportunities all within walking distance.

We are looking for an inspiring, energetic and credible additional Senior Instructor to train, develop and supervise our Instructor team and to deliver high quality experiential learning to a range of groups.

Mill on the Brue is an innovative family run Outdoor Activity Centre in Somerset with a strong environmental ethos. Established in 1982, the Centre provides residential and day courses for schools, youth and student groups, and summer camps for unaccompanied children, with a focus on experiential education. We also host events and functions throughout the year, including weddings and parties.

As well as instructing, our Senior Instructors are involved in planning, training and overseeing the delivery of both residential and day visit groups to ensure quality and consistency. The successful individual will be able to demonstrate high standards of communication, organisation, attention to detail, professionalism and self-motivation, and be a team role model. We are looking for someone who understands and can apply experiential learning principles, together with experience of working with primary school groups.

Salary: - £ 24,000 + 5% pension contribution, regular training opportunities and support in gaining NGB awards.


You need to be enthusiastic and passionate about the outdoors and the environment, understand experiential learning and have a minimum of 12 months experience in a similar role.

You must hold at least two of the following qualifications:

  • SPA/ RCI Award
  • UKCC British Canoeing Level 2 (Core) Coach Award
  • ML / WGL Award or equivalent
  • Valid Driving Licence
  • Valid First Aid certificate (minimum 16 hours)
